Electric Bicycle Law Australia

gavel electric bike laws The electric bicycle law in Australia is more or less the same all over the country. That is something to be truly grateful for. It makes it so much more simple and easy to understand. So here they are:

  • the motor can only be electric,
  • the motor must not exceed 200 Watts,
  • must have functional pedals,
  • the bike must have a saddle,
  • same road rules as bicycles,
  • have a bell or horn,
  • you must wear a helmet,
  • if cycling at night, you must have a front and back light that are visible at 200m. There should also be a red reflector at the back.

The only thing that really varies in Australian laws is the minimum age. The minimum age to cycle an electric bicycle in West Australia is 16.

However in Victoria, the minimum age is 12 years of age.

Otherwise there is no minimum age requirements elsewhere in Australia. These rules are general guidlines as rules do change. If you are interested to find out more information, just visit your local government website. Most links are above.

You can find the rest of the laws here.
