Electric Bicycle Law Canada

gavel electric bike laws The electric bicycle law in Canada follows the guidlines stated in the Canada Gazette. Many provinces haven't applied any regulations for electric bikes.

Because of this, it should be acceptable to follow the laws stated in the Gazette. A power-assisted vehicle follows these guidelines:

  • has functional pedals,
  • has no more than three wheels,
  • the motor can only be electric,
  • the motor dosen't exceed 500 Watts,
  • cannot exceed 20mph, you can cycle faster if you want,
  • the bike has a label put on by the manufacturer stating: the bike is an electric-assisted bicycle, and either:
(i) has an on/off button seperate from the accelerator, or

(ii)the motor cannot be engaged before the electric bicycle reaches 3km/h.

Rules can often change over time, but we should keep you updated on any changes to these laws.

If you follow these laws there are many great benefits, including no tax or insurance.
