Folding electric bicycles are often a step too difficult for the bike industry, but is all that about to change?

This small wheel foldup electric bike is a combination of a top foldable bike and a electric conversion kit, and it actually works very well.

This foldable electric bicycle is called the Nano Brompton...

Nano is a seperate company from Brompton and make the electric kit for the folding Brompton bike. The guy behind it has done a really good job.

The Nano kit will fit so that the Brompton still folds as easy.

Brompton are one of, if not the best company for folding bikes. but are not electric folding bike manufacturers.

Nano have only retailed in the UK, hopefully they will expand globally very soon (see below for update).

So how exactly do you go about getting one of these?

Well, firstly you will need to buy a folding Brompton bike, and order your Nano kit.

The Brompton bike which are all hand built from scratch can range from £630 to £1185. The purpose built Nano kit takes 4 - 6 weeks to get delivered and there's a 25% deposit to be payed. This top quality kit will set you back around £750.

When you get your electric conversion kit just follow the instructions and connect everything up to the Bropmton. When you think you've done everything, give it a few test drives before going on the road just to make sure all is running well.

The last thing you want to see on a busy road is your front wheel falling off... likely resulting in a somersault over your handlebar!

Why Is This Foldable Electric Bicycle So Good?

There are a number of reasons why the Nano Brompton is ahead of the all the other folding electric bicycles.

The electric assist can get you up to speeds of 12 / 15 mph without pedalling, but you can also cycle quite easily without having to use the power thanks to the bike being capable of free-wheeling.

Despite being a conversion kit for a folder, which is usually a bad idea, the Nano Brompton is very quiet when riding, still easy to fold, and most importantly an enjoyable ride.

Another great thing about this foldable electric bike is its ability to comfortably climb hills, taking on 1/8 slopes well. This folding electric bicycles' still light enough to carry with the battery weighing only 2.7 kg and the motor 2.2 kg. Not to mention the very good range of 30 - 40 miles on a charge.

Update

Nano have their new website up and running along with a new team. They can now ship internationally, and claim all stock can be shipped in 4 weeks.

They have also made slight changes to the kit, with a new LiPo battery at 10Ahr (up from 7AHr), and say the kit is still as quiet. This is fantastic news!
