Powabyke Electric Bike Review

A Powabyke electric bike is best known for its value for money. Although they may not be the most advanced or best looking electric bikes they do everything that is promised, and that is everything that's required for an enjoyable experience.

The picture here is of the new Powabyke X-bike. We review it a little further down.

The older 'classic' models are old electric bikes with technology to match its age. They weigh in around 38 kg and use big lead acid batteries. In saying this, Powabyke do offer new lithium batteries with these models but they're still old, chunky and heavy machines.

But, do not be disheartened. There is a reason why the older Powabyke electric bike has sold well over the years and why they still sell well today. And the reason is simple, they are very good value for money.

The Powabyke electric bike does what you need of it, and that is what matters. It will get you up those big hills with relative ease (better than many new more expensive models), and they will power you along the street without problem. Although the lead acid battery is very old, the range is surprisingly good at around 30 miles.

Another advantage of the Powabykes old and simple design is that if anything does happen to go wrong it's easy to fix.

If you're interested in more details, the classic 6 speed Eurobike and City Byke comes in 24" or 26" wheels, an aluminium frame, powerful light-action Alloy V brakes at front and rear, low rise bars, comfy sprung seat with suspension post, a chrome stand and rear rack, 36 V Lead Acid battery with lithium-ion option, brushed 250W motor, twist throttle and pedal assist.

Powabyke Electric Bike 'Classic' Overview

Overall, if you want an electric bike that will get the job done at good value for money, look no further than Powabykes classic range. They are certainly old beasts, but in saying that they are one of, if not the best, of the cheaper electric bikes available.

Powabyke Electric Bike X-Bike Review

The newer Powabyke is the X-bike, a collaboration with bicycle company Raleigh. This X-bike looks much more like your every day regular bike than the older Powabykes, and weighs much more like them aswell at 23.6 kg.

However, the Powabyke electric bike is much faster than a conventional bike. The X-bike uses the same 250W motor used in the older models and despite being quite a large and old piece of technology, overall the X-bike is up there in terms of speed with other fast electric bikes.

A big difference between the older models and the new X-bike is the range on one charge. The new X-bike achieved 16 miles in reasonably flat terrain (a fair bit of stop/starting), while the older model achieved 30 miles. Powabyke say they done this as most people travel less than 10 miles to work, so much above that is unessecary.

Whatever you think of this, one thing that's not open for criticism is the much improved charge time. The new X-bike can charge in under 3 hours while the 'classic' models can take as much up to 7 hours.

Another positive with the X-bike is that you can use the twist throttle or the pedal assistance for power. Although this is great, it does take a few seconds for the power to kick in when you start pedalling and this can take a bit of getting used to, it certainly was annoying at the start.

When purchasing you do get the choice of gears. You can have the X-bike as a 24 speed which does a good job and is more than enough gears. Then there is the cheaper option of the 6 speed which is mabye a little too little. So you have the choice of plenty at a greater cost, or less for cheaper.

If you are interested in the details, the X-bike uses a 21" aluminium frame, has powerful light-action Alloy V Brakes at front and rear, 28" 700c Accedo double wall Alloys (wheels), angle-adjustable low rise steering bar, top Spec Gel seat with 27.2 suspension post, height adjustable stand, 250W brushed motor, twist throttle and power assistance (takes 2 seconds to kick in), 92cm is the min. saddle height from floor and the max. is 110cm.

PowabykeElectric Bike X-Bike Overview

Simply put, the X-bike(s) do not have the greatest range by any means, but does everything you need it to do, and at its price the X-bike(s) are very good value for money, and is the best choice in their price range. So if a Powabyke X-bike is in your price range it's a real good choice.
